Current Top Ten 2NE1 Songs

Okay, I mentioned "Gotta Be You" a little while ago, and I've been streaming 2NE1's discography nonstop since then. So now I have to impulse-write this one, because I forgot how much I love their music and I absolutely must screech about it!! I think EXID is my favorite second-gen group, actually, but 2NE1 is a very close second--they have the kind of star power that I'm completely in awe of. I got into 2NE1 in 2020, via Angelina from ktube, so I've never experienced a comeback from them (though let's just say Park Bom's "Do Re Mi Fa Sol" took over my life for a good while when it came out), but I've still made so many memories with their music over the past four years & have plenty to say about it!

1. Gotta Be You

One of those perfect pop songs--it's almost four minutes long (cue the cheering from fifth-gen stans!!), and each moment feels perfectly engineered to be a dopamine rush all on its own. It's bright and full of life, and even after four years of being a mainstay on my playlists, I still find myself obsessing over this one.

2. Fire

This could easily be my favorite debut ever, though I'd hate to overlook Lucy's "Flowering" like that! The 2NE1 ladies are SO commanding in this song, and it's crammed full of hooks that have stood the test of time. Even with its quilted-together approach to song structure, "Fire" is pretty much infinitely danceable & never feels jarring. It's a similar style of campy dance-pop to 4Minute's debut with "Hot Issue" (which I also love), but "Fire" is constructed so much more carefully--it has an incessant energy that "Hot Issue" doesn't, and it shows off 2NE1's capabilities so impressively!

3. Lonely

This is definitely the most obvious pick here--of course "Lonely" is in the top three. For newbies: before Blackpink's "Stay", there was 2NE1's "Lonely". This one is such an easy listen, a comforting ballad that never tests your patience. Its hook isn't a big final chorus that you have to wait for, it's the steady presence of the chorus throughout the song that's so simple, yet so satisfying. Though this may not be what you expect from a hit 2NE1 song, it's iconic in its own way.

4. Come Back Home - Unplugged Ver.

If you've ever heard me talk about Blackpink's "Whistle - Acoustic Ver", this should come as no surprise! These two songs occupy similar spaces in my mind. I love that we got this unplugged version, without the beat drop, because it really gives the sadness and longing of "Come Back Home" room to breathe. And the 2NE1 ladies really take advantage of that, too--their line deliveries are crammed with interesting details that really make this track special. Also, CL's rap over acoustic guitar is such a highlight.

5. It Hurts (I usually listen to the Japanese version!)

Yes, this is the third ballad in a row, sorry! This one took me a while to get, but now I'm wailing "YOU'RE NOT MINE ANYMORE !!!!!" right along with them. This whole song is one really slow build, so it took me a while to find the patience for it--but the payoff, with those big emotive high notes, is so worth it.

6. Scream

You really have to look past the second-gen cringe for this one, but I'm more than willing, because "Scream" has quite a bit of depth to it behind that grating post-chorus. This is the best use of Park Bom's vocals like, ever, I think--she sets the chorus on fire. And that bridge is heavenly; after CL's first "I fell in love", my heart melts.

7. Don't Cry (Park Bom solo)

This song saved a friendship for me once, funny enough. I know not everyone loves Park Bom's voice as much as I do--she doesn't have the range of abilities that a lot of other vocalists do, so I get it--but I find her performance here, paired with that fuzzy early-2010's production, just so wonderfully soothing.

8. Ugly

A once-in-a-generation kind of chorus, and 2NE1 have the vocals to back it up.

9. Falling in Love

Yeah, sue me, "Falling in Love" is in the top ten. This is trash, sure, but it's exactly my kind of trash. For being as annoying as it is, this song has some legitimately gorgeous vocal sections, too (what is this, an NCT song?). Like, Minzy's voice in the verses? Oh my god. And CL's first-verse rap may well be 2NE1's best--it's fast-paced but sooo catchy, it flows easily but has quite a bit of kick to it. In conclusion, I can see how people think this is an absolute abomination, but I've never had a bad time listening to it--and I listen to it a lot, believe it or not!

10. Please Don't Go (CL & Minzy)

After I heard the chorus once, I knew I'd never be able to stay away from this song. Be warned: the second-gen cringe is strong here, so this won't be for everyone, but CL & Minzy really perform the hell out of it--they bring "Please Don't Go" some clarity, and it ends up a really addictive pop anthem! And that final chorus, when the vocals (the HARMONIES!!!) get to take center stage?? This song is a gem, truly.

Honorable Mentions: You & I (Park Bom solo), Hate You, Missing You, I am the best (obligatory), I Love You, Hello Bitches (CL solo), Spring (Park Bom & Dara), Lovely (Minzy solo) (there's also a Tagalog version of this one, which is so cool!)

OOF this is literally so hard they don’t even have thattt many songs but they’re my absolute favorite women i love almost everything they’ve done so this won’t be a definite list and i am for SURE missing some of my own favorites but like! just off the top of my head:

1. hot pink (top concept / song / everythinggg to me 🩷 i literally like the way you pink it + i gotta plug the iconic tipsy live i mean remember when idols used to know how to SING? <- jokingly ofc)

2. woo yoo by hani (the pun!!!! ‘i say i need ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh you ooh you’ sounding like she’s saying she needs uyu aka milk in korean is so funny and it’s such a GORGEOUS beautiful song esp when she sings it live like here where she made the audience laugh w the little pun too hehe <3)

3. I LOVE YOUUUUU it’s vocal prowess it’s my beautiful women SCREAMING they love me at the top of their incredible lungs and THIS is one of my fave vids of them singing they’re just SO GOOOOD i always get chills from solji + hyelin at the very end)

4. velvet (LE solo) = are you hungry? (jeonghwa & hyelin) i couldn’t choooose and it’s so funny if you know both of these songs bc they’re so opposite LMFAO but they’re both such gorgeous examples of their respective genres and show how even though they are all incredible together they still have so much to show individually/as subunits and they’re so versatile and everything they dab in just turns out to be so fun/good like! my exid!!

5. night rather than day (even without solji they managed to make such a gorgeous comeback that sounded just like exid (of course while missing solji dearly) and they yet again showed something new & beautiful and i loooove that song it’s one of my faves + who would exid be without a tipsy live) and up & down and ah yeah all tied here i have to mention them all i wanna mention L.I.E. too but if i got into why i love each of those we’d literally be here all night and it’s already taking me SO long to answer these fkhskdk so !!! trust me they’re incredible and i love them so much for GOOD REASON 💖💖💖

just saw a post talking about the tlt cast doing kpop dance challenges and couldn't shut up so now i'm making my own post. i know significantly more about girl groups than i do boy groups, so i'm assigning everyone a girl group and/or female soloist enjoy.

judith: she was a wonder girls stan growing up and acts like it was just a casual phase but she still religiously awaits every comeback from sunmi

marta: mamamoo. she's not actually involved with the fandom in any way she just knows good vocals when she hears em

coronabeth: she has pretty broad tastes for the most part and tends to be a bit inconsistent with her ults-- these days it's ive and she is THE wonyoung defender, but she had a hell of a red velvet phase before that, and there was also a good while when she was big into momoland.

ianthe: aoa. miniskirt was the only song of theirs that she knew before the scandal she hopped onto that ship right as it was sinking. i do also think corona showed her the monster mv when it came out and she was obligated by sisterly law to make fun of it but then promptly binged every single thing red velvet has ever created.

babs: a boygroup stan but he makes an exception for ioi (somi specifically).

isaac: he likes nmixx and aespa, but i think he's more intense about craxy and a couple other nugu groups. he enjoys the newer songs that sound like three completely different songs got smashed together my boy wants NOISE.

jeannemary: DREAMCATCHER. girlie is the biggest somnie on earth and has a massive crush on dami and sua in particular. she's a big girlcrush enjoyer in general though she also stans everglow, pixy, and purplekiss.

dulcinea: nature, gfriend, and chungha. she likes cutesy groups that do total 180s in concept i think nature dropping girls was one of the best days of her damn life.

protesilaus: fifty fifty but he stanned before cupid released. also cignature he really likes nugu groups.

silas: gangnam style is the only kpop song he has ever heard and he is deeply distraught upon learning that there's more.

colum: he enjoys one (1) song by a kpop girl group and it is la vie en rose by iz*one

harrowhark: by and large does not listen to kpop but she saw the mv to paradise lost by gain as a young teenager and it Did Something To Her. i think there's a timeline out there where she's a cheshire but in that timeline her parents love her

gideon: so ik i gave mamamoo to marta but gideon appreciates a hot woman with hella ability to command a stage and mamamoo is four of those. she likes hyuna for the exact same reason but i am especially talking about red/roll deep/how's this era hyuna. oh and exid.

Well, the spiciest vocals come from Changmin, who is a level 2 spicey boy at MOST. I mean, the 240105 Music Bank high note for "Down"? I don't know how half the boy groups didn't immediately vaporize as soon as he did That. I know it was probably just that he didn't hit the note at first, but he made it sound so good with that dissonance resolving into whistle register? (I would say something about Nissan Stadium Forever Love but until that's back up on YouTube I refuse to contemplate it so I don't burst into tears) But I'm a hater and don't like him so don't put him on the list.

EXID's Solji might not be active right meow, but she just did that musical so she counts!

Of course BTOB, Eunkwang and Minhyuk especially, I mean, "Boom" era was everything to me.

I might be ride or die for Seonghwa Main Vocal When, but back in like February 2021 I said San from Ateez strained a lot and he said "why would you say such a thing? btw hi lesbians" and just immediately went fuckin insane. I'm bummed it happened after they stopped actively promoting it but I will never shut up about how when he gets a mic for "Turbulence" he saves the whole song with that modulation to keep it from being a diminished fifth. I know he's a great dancer but he's vocal line for a reason. Watch "Breathe" btw.

IU!!!!! GIRL!!!!!!! No list of spiciest vocals would be complete without IU. "Love Poem" should be a UNESCO World Heritage piece of culture. I love her and I can't believe you're keeping her hostage and away from us, Addy.

Fun fact: DK is actually short for "DyKe rights" (editor's note: this is not true) and my sister will let me blast "Hot" in her car specifically so we can vocalize along with his chest voice there. He's got such a good ear.

The Boyz genuinely has some power vocals. Why do you think his name is SANGyeon? That video of him singing in a parking lot plays behind my eyes while I try to fall asleep.

Shownu simply does not get the credit he deserves as a vocalist. His voice is more subtle, so maybe not particularly spicey, but he's my husband and I will not let him go unappreciated on this list. What's the opposite of spicey? That's how I feel about I.M, except he's actually got interesting vocals, he's technically weaker but I think that makes him more interesting vocally. Plus he's the King of Vocal Fry (complimentary).

Another vocal fry master -- Taehyun from TXT. I feel so much about that kid. Most of it good.

For the hags, all of 2pm! (I'm not taking antipsychotics right now so I'm allowed to be delusional and they're active in my heart.) "Make It" was THE song of 2021, no notes at all. And "ADTOY" had no right to be that good. Also we love grown men being grown up spicey.

Woodz, don't talk to me about enlistment if I don't acknowledge it then it isn't happening. The live versions of "Chaser" and "Trigger" and "Accident" and and and and? I think his harmonizing gets overshadowed sometimes by his vocal power, especially since he has to harmonize with his backing track rather than another singer, but bro... bro... Also he was the closest to a Changmin "Mirotic" note, I will ignore any arguments to the contrary.

Red Velvet's Seulgi has really good vocals when she's given the chance to flex them, I really wish we could hear more from her. Underappreciated, tbh.

Highlight's Dongwoon, do we need to talk about that performance of "Fiction" again? Because I will talk about that performance of "Fiction" again. And I choose to believe his scene in "Good Luck" is part of the most watched section because of that little C# Major moment. Yeah his only other band mate Yeoseob is good but I gotta give the crown to Dongwoon. Also his outfits from last May's concerts were so spicey.

I'm so excited for Chungha's comeback. I know she's not really appreciated for her vocals since she's definitely a pop vocalist, but "Play"! I'm not even mad when she uses playback on music shows, she's in chest voice enough.

I can't believe I'm about to put a manlet on this list but Hui's got the spice. He's got the vocals. He deserves. That's all.

And how about Doyeon from Weki Meki. Siyeon from Dreamcatcher (omg that "Overdose" cover). Ailee, obviously. BB Girls Yujeong. Sistar just as a whole but especially Hyolyn, "Layin Low" changed me as a person and I swear it wasn't just the Nicole Kirkland choreo.

No but legitimately the way kpop singers use "sexy mysterious and EXOTIC" sounds that wholly come from South Asian, Middle Eastern, and African countries in their 'badass' concept music videos and comebacks, it's obvious that they think Brown and Black people have an inherent sexiness to them as well as an inherent danger because we have darker skin and are therefore naturally scary. Like I was excited for the EXID comeback but it's literally just an appropriation of common Middle Eastern melodies in a song to 'amp up' the feeling of 'ooh look at us we're so dangerous'. Yeah, I don't know much about payola, but every song that does well on Spotify is accused of payola, right? And this is Jungkook, who joined hands with Scooter Braun and is breaking all kinds of records now. The accusations were inevitable... Also, if you're curious about my thoughts on JJK1 being all in English, I had an ask about that.

I love that you're asking me about kpop! Thank you! On New Jeans, if you look up my posts about them (I've only written 1 or maybe 2), you'll see I sort of boycott them... Maybe it's hypocritical because all labels suck, and Min Hee-jin is not the only predatory, melomaniac asshole out there, but she loves to hear herself talk more than most. And NJs are not the only groups with very young members, but very few groups have all minor members when they debut. Also, people's obsession with a bunch of teenage girls is a bit weird to me... I just don't want to listen to their music. When I had no idea who they were, I watched their Attention MV, and the sensual RnB vibes and the way those girls were filmed seemed inappropriate to me. I didn't fall in love with the song either. I've heard snippets of their other songs, because you can't escape them in kpop, and I've heard a NJs cover more than once, but I don't listen to them, sorry. Their style isn't really my style though. I like fun kpop tracks, not really chill ones for the most part.

I only listen to kpop really. I love kpop. I love that I can't understand the lyrics when they're shitty, I love how fun and playful the concepts can be, I love that there aren't as many boring breakup songs (Korean pop is a different story), I love the dancing, I love that the songs are fun and "noisy". I mostly listen to ggs. I find them the most exciting, refreshing, and also relaxing. I love girls so it's natural! (Listening to bgs isn't anti-feminist though lmao). My favorite ggs right now are Twice, IVE, and LSF in that order, but I love Twice and IVE's music a lot more than LSF's. I like Sakura a lot though. I used to love Itzy but haven't been vibing with them much lately, but they're still one of my favorites. I really like NMIXX! JYPE is my favorite company musically. I'm a bit done with Stayc right now, after the curry song thing, but I like them too. These are mostly new groups haha. I like Apink and Exid too. I like Fifty Fifty and Aespa, I listen to some KEP1ER1. When a group I know, even if by name, has a comeback, I usually listen to them. When a group debuts, I try to give them a shot too. This new group who debuted, Kiss of Life, are killing it. I also listen casually to RV (not recently though), TRI.BE, Billlie, Weeekly, Secret Number, Cherry Bullet, WJSN, Viviz, Woo!ah!, etc... I like Eunbi, Yuri, and more recently Yena, from IZ*ONE too, though they are soloists.

As for bgs... I don't listen to them a lot, but there are tons of amazing bg songs that are some of the best kpop songs (excluding BTS). I like TXT and SKZ the most, but haven't vibed with SKZ recently. I like Enhypen's tts and some Exo, I like recent Shinee. Recently, I loved PHarmony1's Jump, LUN8's Wild Heart, VAV's Designer, Treasure's Move, and even 8TURN's Excel... I listen to random songs from a lot of groups. I kinda like KARD but not some of their tts.
